Join the DCC as a Student Director!
Do you think God is calling you to lead? Use your gifts to help build His Kingdom here at Duke!
There are seventeen different Student Director positions open for both undergraduate and graduate students. Take a moment and review the requirements for being a Student Director and the job descriptions for the various positions below.
Applications are open October 5–26, 2025.
Student Director Requirements
The Duke Catholic Center is a spiritual home where Duke students encounter the transformative love of the Heart of Christ - in the Gospel, in the Sacraments, and in community with one another - so that students become formed as Christian leaders and apostles.
In joining the Student Director team, you are committing to living out this mission in partnership with the DCC.
- Holy Week: ALL Student Directors must assist DCC staff during Holy Week (04/02/26 - 04/05/26). The Triduum will involve a total of 5 liturgies over the course of 4 days in addition to a preparation meeting for Student Directors of Liturgy. While the Student Directors of Liturgy will play a special role during this sacred time, we rely on the servant-leadership of every Student Director to help us prepare. The importance of your work during this time cannot be overstated and is a requirement.
- Mass and Holy Hour are the foremost priorities. None of what we do is possible without Jesus. It is all about a relationship with Christ, and it is He who works in and through us. Therefore, it is essential to nourish this relationship through the Eucharist. We ask you to attend Mass every Sunday and commit to attending Wednesday Holy Hours at 8 PM each week.
- Commit to taking 10-20 minutes for prayer each day (it is impossible to have a relationship with someone you never speak to).
- Ensure that your role as Student Director is a priority. The best way to be a Student Director is to bring your whole self - this includes your gifts and connections as they relate to other roles you have at Duke. This position will help form you in a way that allows you to live more fully and be involved in other aspects of your life at Duke. But to fully receive this formation requires fully committing to your position. Therefore, please prioritize your programming and our regular meetings outside of personal health, academic commitments, and employment.
- Attend biweekly meetings with the full Student Director team.
- Attend monthly check-in with the campus minister.
- Agree to abide by the Student Director Code of Conduct (see below).
By virtue of our baptism, all Catholics share in the mission of the Church to continue the work of Jesus Christ. We have the great privilege to know, love, and serve Christ, and we should orient our lives around inviting other people into that relationship.
The call to discipleship is abundant in grace. It is also an awesome responsibility. As a Student Director, you represent not only yourself, but the DCC and, in a way, the Catholic Church as a whole. Your role as a leader gives you a particular position of trust which comes with particular obligations - your behavior, both public and private, has the potential to inspire those entrusted to the pastoral care of the DCC to faith and hope and to motivate them toward greater participation in a life of faith. When that trust is abused, it has the potential to cause scandal and to weaken or destroy faith. It is therefore essential that you are constantly mindful of the trust given to you.
Faithfully discharging the responsibilities that accompany our work requires constant prayerful reflection and must be sustained and supported by God’s grace. Our obligations require each of us to act with love and prudence. The Student Director Code of Conduct assists in this task.
These statements do not presume to provide answers to all ethical questions. They present a set of general standards to help guide day-to-day actions and form a framework for developing policies and discussing moral/ethical questions. All Student Directors, when accepting their position, agree to abide by this Code of Conduct and understand that disregarding these principles through personal conduct or a lifestyle contrary to the moral and religious teachings of the Roman Catholic Church may prompt conversations with DCC ministry staff. Persistent breaches of the Code of Conduct may lead to removal from a position of ministry leadership.
As stated in your Student Director application, perfection is not expected. What is expected is a good faith effort to live these standards as Student Directors, and a commitment to seeking help from a member of the ministry staff if you ever find yourself struggling to understand or follow these principles.
All Student Directors will:
- Respect and uphold the teachings and precepts of the Catholic Church.
- Respect and uphold the rights, dignity and worth of each person from conception to natural death.
- Conduct their relationships with others free of deception, manipulation, exploitation, or intimidation.
- Seek to provide an environment that is non-discriminatory, free from all forms of abuse, and that promotes respect, self control, and personal safety.
- Be responsible stewards of the human, temporal, and financial resources of the DCC with which they are entrusted.
- Maintain a high level of competence in their designated role in the DCC and prudently attend to their physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional well-being.
- Behave in a way that promotes the welfare of the community as a whole and exemplifies the strong moral tradition of the Church.
Please put these on your calendar - attendance at these events is mandatory. If you know ahead of time that you will be unable to make a particular date, please communicate this with Monica Cronin (monica.cronin@duke.edu) as soon as possible - exceptions will be considered on a case by case basis.
