Almsgiving is the action that leads us to see others and love them. Prayerfully discern ways that you can give to others by sharing your time, treasure, and talent. To facilitate this practice, the Duke Catholic Center is holding two intentional giving campaigns during Mass with charities we already partner with: Catholic Relief Services and the Durham Food Pantry. If you wish to contribute to one of these ministries, please indicate the name of the charity on your Venmo donation (@dukecatholic). You can also visit the Duke Catholic App (Apple Store/Google Play Store) to learn more about these ministries and explore other charities our ministry is involved in.

Lent offers us a beautiful invitation to receive the Sacrament of Penance as we prepare for the Paschal Feast.

All are invited to join us for a Penance Service this Wednesday, April 2, at 8:00 p.m. in Goodson Chapel. During this time you will have an opportunity to confess your sins to one of the many priests who will be present for the service. Everyone is encouraged to make a thorough examination of conscience before coming to the Penance Service. You can find resources to help you prepare for the Sacrament of Penance in the DCC App.

We know many of this year’s graduates have been pivotal in your life at Duke. Whether they welcomed you into their small groups, helped run the best Masses you’ve ever seen, or just walked with you in friendship over the years, we want you to join in celebrating their time at Duke!

All students are welcome to join us for an elegant dinner on April 3 at the Champions Club Lounge to honor our Catholic graduates—underclassmen and grad students alike. There is a $15 reservation fee for any non-graduating student attending. Contact Ali Shoenfelt with any questions at ali.shoenfelt@duke.edu.

On Friday April 4th at 6:00pm in Westbrook 0012 (bottom floor of Divinity School), Dr. Paul Gondreau (a theologian at Providence) will give a lecture on marriage: “The Two Become One Flesh: The Catholic View of the Sacrament of Marriage”.

On Saturday April 5th, we will host a brunch with Dr. Gondreau at the FAH where he will discuss the topic of Christ’s humanity. There will be Mass at 9:00am, with the seminar and brunch to follow.

Looking to serve families in the Durham community? The DCC will be cooking and serving food to families transitioning out of homelessness through Families Moving Forward (FMF). FMF is a local nonprofit that provides safe housing as well as enrichment programs to help families break the cycle of poverty. We will be praying for these families and cooking dinner on April 8 from 5-6:30 pm at the FAH. We will then be serving the food on April 9 from 4:30-6:30 pm. If you are interested in cooking or serving the food, sign up here!

ET RELIGIO SYMPOSIUM - April 9 | 6:30-8:30 p.m. | Fitzpatrick Atrium

At this semester’s et Religio Symposium, we’ll hear from three experts on the role of religion in the current Israel-Palestine conflict. Coming from Muslim, Jewish, and Christian backgrounds, these guests also bring expertise on political science, public policy, and religious leadership. We’ll examine ways that religion contributes to conflict as well as religious resources for peace and reconciliation.

Meeting over a meal, we aim to foster civil, constructive conversations about these complex issues, listening to diverse religious and nonreligious perspectives. No matter what you believe, you’re welcome at the table. RSVP by Wednesday, April 2: https://qr.link/5iGRKf

SHAKESPEARE, SEX, AND THE ART OF FRIENDSHIP - April 10 | 6:00 p.m. | Falcone-Arena House

Fr. Shawn Aaron, LC will share reflections based in classic literature and the heart of what it means to be human to help students navigate the difficult world of relationships. RSVP here.

We are so excited to announce that we’re partnering with NC State and UNC’s Catholic Centers to host a spring fling formal on April 12th. It’s located at a farm about 20 minutes off campus and the dress code is formal, long dresses for women and suit and tie or jacket and khakis for men. Tickets are only $10 and you can find the link to purchase them in the groupme and on the linktree (linktr.ee/dukecatholic). We hope to see you all there!

Are you studying abroad next semester? Interested in visiting the Eternal City during the Jubilee Year? Fr. Juan José will be in Rome the weekend of October 11-12 and would love to be your guide! After living in Rome for four years, Father knows the city well and will be sure you check out the best gelato and restaurants in the city -- along with visiting St. Peter's Basilica, the other three Major Basilicas, the Vatican Museums, and of course, walking around Rome. No RSVP is needed at this time; just collecting interested students! If this sounds like something you'd be interested in attending, let us know!

"Lent is a time to see what things I have to leave behind that I can’t bring with me to my new life."

On this Fourth Sunday of Lent, Fr. Juan José reminds us that Lent is a journey of spiritual renewal—we are called to trust where God is leading us, even when the path is unclear. Just as the Israelites wandered for 40 years before reaching the Promised Land, we, too, are being prepared for new life in the resurrection.

In the midst of sacrifice and challenge, don’t forget to rejoice, we know how this story ends!

You can find Fr. Juan José's reflection along with a reflection on penance from Catherine Papa, Duke Sophomore, on our YouTube channel and within the DCC App.

Discover our digital Pocket Companion for your Lenten journey nested within the DCC App (Apple Store/Google Play Store)! This digital Lent Pocket Companion includes a Spotify playlist; Confession, Rosary, and Stations of the Cross how-to-guides; prayers; Scripture reflections; and much more!

Let's walk together, step by step, on this sacred journey through Lent.

Jesus said to his disciples, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap, for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.”

Luke 6:38

Consider adding the DCC to your
Lenten almsgiving offerings

Lent allows us to cultivate a sacrificial spirit of generosity and charity. It allows us to share what we have and who we are with other people. It puts us in communion with others and helps us understand that we are all members of the Body of Christ.

If you have experienced the love of Christ through the Duke Catholic Center, we invite you to help make that same experience possible for others. By giving monthly, you become a partner in sharing Christ’s love on campus.

Whether it’s $5, $10, or the price of your weekly coffee, your monthly sacrifice supports Mass, small groups, music, retreats, and more for current and incoming Catholic students.
