February 27 | 5:30 p.m. | Rubenstein/Perkins Library 153

The Falcone-Arena House (FAH) offers the Duke Catholic Center a unique opportunity to minister to the Duke Catholic community. To create the right environment of welcome and community, the DCC offers four Duke Catholic students the opportunity to live together in the FAH, offering a spacious and comfortable housing opportunity at a much-reduced housing rate so that these four residents may facilitate a healthy sense of Catholic community on the property. We are currently seeking resident applications for the 2025-2026 School Year; click here to learn more and apply!

Lent Starts March 5. Participate in Greener Lent this year, a Lenten program preparing our hearts for Easter through the lens of Laudato Sí, Pope Francis’s encyclical on our common home. Last year, the prayers, fasting and alms of the Greener Lent community had a huge impact, reducing an estimated 60,000 pounds of greenhouse gases from entering the environment and giving a little over 500 of our brothers and sisters in Christ in African parishes access to potable water. Let’s do it again! Sign up today at greenerlent.org.

40 Days for Life is an innovative pro-life campaign that focuses on 40 days of prayer and fasting, 40 days of peaceful vigil at abortion facilities, and 40 days of grassroots educational outreach. The 40-day time frame is drawn from examples throughout Biblical history where God brought about world-changing transformation in 40-day periods (Jesus in the desert, Moses on Mt. Sinai, and Noah after 40 days of rain). It challenges everyone to ponder the meaning and value of the inalienable right to life from the prenatal period to the elderly, those with disabilities, the impoverished, and the underrepresented factions of our North Carolina communities.

Our Chapel Hill 2025 40 Days for Life Spring campaign starts on Ash Wednesday, March 5th and goes to Palm Sunday, April 13th, 7am to 7pm daily. The location is outside (in front of) the Chapel Hill Planned Parenthood (public right-of-way) at 1765 Dobbins Drive, Chapel Hill 27514.

All peaceful pro-lifers are invited to come and through prayer, fasting, and community outreach, we hope to change hearts, save lives, and end abortion in our community.

Preparing for Lent

Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday (March 5) and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday (April 17). It's a period of preparation to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection at Easter. During Lent, we seek the Lord in prayer by reading Sacred Scripture; we serve by giving alms; and we practice self-control through fasting. We are called not only to abstain from luxuries during Lent, but to a true inner conversion of heart as we seek to follow Christ's will more faithfully. We recall the waters of baptism in which we were also baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ.

Many know of the tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we are also called to practice self-discipline and fast in other ways throughout the season. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fasting tradition in this reflection. In addition, the giving of alms is one way to share God's gifts—not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. As St. John Chrysostom reminds us: "Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2446).

Now is the time to begin to prepare for this preparation season - begin to formulate your own Lent plan. How will you deepen your relationship with God through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving? How will you prepare your heart for this journey?

Together We Thrive:
Help Sustain Our Faith Community

You might think, "I don't have enough to give."But giving isn't just for those with steady incomes—it's an opportunity to grow in trust and commitment to God and our faith in Him, even as students.

The Duke Catholic Center isn't like a typical parish with families supporting it every week, and the DCC is not funded by the university or the diocese. In fact, over 85% of our funding comes directly from individual contributions made by students, parents, and alumni.

Whether it's $5, $10, or the price of your weekly coffee, a regular weekly or monthly financial commitment shows your love for this community and keeps it thriving for all of us! Let's join together in intentional giving and make an impact today.
