Saints Peter and Paul: Two Saints, One Feast Day
As early as 258 CE, there is evidence of a tradition of celebrating the solemnities of St. Peter and St. Paul on the same day. St. Peter, one of the Twelve and the chief of the Apostles, the Rock upon which Christ built His Church, and St. Paul “called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God” (Romans 1:1) and Apostle to the Gentiles.
“Christian tradition has always considered Sts. Peter and Saint Paul to be inseparable: indeed, together, they represent the whole Gospel of Christ.” (Pope Benedict XVI)
Together, the two saints are the founders of the See of Rome - through their preaching, ministry, and martyrdom there.
In a sermon in the year 395, St. Augustine of Hippo said of Sts. Peter and Paul: “Both apostles share the same feast day, for these two were one; and even though they suffered on different days, they were as one. Peter went first, and Paul followed. And so we celebrate this day made holy for us by the apostles' blood. Let us embrace what they believed, their life, their labors, their sufferings, their preaching, and their confession of faith.”
Traditions in Rome to help celebrate these two saints include fireworks at Castel Saint’Angelo to the east of the Vatican, the Infiorata, or “flowering”, decorating St. Peter’s Basilica with beautiful mosaic flower carpets. Outside of Rome, nautical celebrations are popular for coastal communities, harvest celebrations in Alpine regions, and Austria and Bavaria have a tradition of the Petersfeuer bonfire.
However you celebrate, we can all be inspired and learn from these two flawed men who were taught and loved by Jesus. Jesus says to us as he said, in effect, to Peter: “It is not you who have chosen me, but I who have chosen you." (John 15:16)
