Black Catholic History Month
Celebrating the long history and proud heritage of Black Catholics
On July 24, 1990, the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus of the United States designated November as Black Catholic History Month, which is a time to celebrate and recall in a special way the saints and souls of Africa and the African Diaspora.
According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, there are over 3 million African American Catholics in the U.S. today, but Black Catholics trace their faith history back to Christian antiquity long before other nations heard the Good News. In the Acts of the Apostles (8:26-40), we read of the conversion of the Ethiopian Eunuch by Philip the Deacon. The early church also saw three popes who were born in Africa: Saints Victor I, Melchiade, and Gelasius I. During Black Catholic History Month, we also remember Black Catholic Saints like Saint Cyprian, Moses the Black, Athanasius, Perpetua, Felicitas, Mary of Egypt, and Augustine of Hippo.
This month also provides an opportunity to learn about the Black Catholics who are currently in the process of canonization. These Black Catholics are aptly called "The Saintly Six": Servant of God Sister Thea Bowman, Venerable Henriette Delille, Venerable Pierre Toussaint, Venerable Mother Mary Langs, Venerable Father Augustus Tolton, and Servant of God Julia Greeley.
