Formation Brunch

Saturday, September 19 | 9-11 AM

Students, don’t miss this opportunity for formation!

We are kicking off a new series of Formation Brunches for our Duke undergraduate and graduate students. This fall, we are focusing on apologetics: defending the faith.

We’ll begin with 9 AM Mass in the FAH Chapel, followed by a hearty brunch and a talk from Fr. Juan José Hernández, LC on why Catholics believe that Mary never sinned—and how to talk with friends who may have questions or doubts about this teaching. (And if you have some doubts yourself, that’s okay, too! 😉) We’ll have time for questions and conversation before wrapping up by 11 AM.
Fall Formation Brunch Topics:
  • September 19: The Problem of a Perfect Mary
  • October 24: Saved by faith or works?
  • November 14: Why do Catholics pray to saints?

LIMITED SPACES AVAILABLE

The Ignite retreat, happening next weekend - September 4–6, on the North Carolina coast, is more than a chance to make new friends—it’s an invitation to discover the many ways to get involved in Catholic life at Duke, from small groups and Adoration to music ministry, Confession, and so much more.

First-year students receive a special discounted rate and scholarships are available. The registration fee covers costs of transportation, lodging, all meals, and merch. Monday after the retreat this year is Labor Day - meaning no class, so you have an extra day to refresh on campus before classes start again.

Registration deadline is September 2 - or when the spaces fill up - so please do not wait until the last minute to register!

What To Bring To Your First Spiritual Direction

You don't need a perfect spiritual autobiography. You just need to begin.

Fr. Nicholas Sheehy, LC, from Beyond the Pew

“I have my first meeting coming up. What am I supposed to do?”

People can often be confused about how to prepare for spiritual direction because they are not sure what it is. Frequently, people confuse spiritual direction with counseling or therapy. The spiritual director is not a handkerchief to catch your tears. He or she is an outstretched hand, sometimes helping you up and sometimes shining light on the road God has called you to follow.

Spiritual Direction vs. Counseling

Spiritual Direction does not take the place of good psychological counseling. It can, however, help in a lot of the same cases. Something important to recognize is that Spiritual Direction and Counseling have different purposes. Counseling and therapy focus on mental and emotional health. Spiritual Direction addresses your relationship with God and your discernment of his action in your life. Feelings and emotions may come to the surface in both cases, but they are not the same thing. You may find substantial overlap as far as the topics you discuss in each context, but the lens and purpose are different.

Spiritual direction is not primarily about getting answers from someone else. Rather, it is about learning to recognize God’s voice and respond to his grace.

Will you join us in supporting Catholic life at Duke?

The Duke Catholic Center is more than a campus ministry. It’s a home away from home where students grow in their faith, discover the love of Christ, and are inspired to become leaders who bring the Gospel wherever life takes them.

No gift is too small. Every gift is an act of faith in the next generation of the Church, and an investment in the mission we share.
