Nearly half a million pilgrims visited Santiago de Compostela last year, marking a new record for the pilgrimage site. You too can walk the ancient route to the tomb of the apostle of St. James - the DCC will embark on a pilgrimage from Oviedo to Santiago along the Camino this May.
Registration is required by this Wednesday, January 15 and registration priority will be given to current Duke undergraduate and graduate students.

What is a Jubilee Year?
2025 is the Jubilee Year of Hope
Pope Francis has declared 2025 to be a Jubilee Year of Hope. What does that mean? Jubilee years are one of the most ancient aspects of our faith. Mosaic law prescribed a Jubilee Year as a time to re-establish a proper relationship with God, with other people, and with all creation, and involved the forgiveness of debts, the return of misappropriated land, and a fallow period for the fields.
In Leviticus, God tells Israel to count 49 years (seven times seven) and then blow the ram’s horn, or yovel -- which is the Hebrew word for Jubilee -- on Yom Kipper, the Day of Atonement.
The year after that event, the 50th year, becomes a year consecrated to God: “You shall treat this 50th year as sacred. You shall proclaim liberty in the land for all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, when each of you shall return to your own property, each of you to your own family.” (Lv 25:10)
A Jubilee Year, then, is a time for restoration, reconciliation and renewal. Pilgrimages have become one way we honor God’s call to return to our spiritual homes and families and to be reconciled and restore our relationships.
There are many ways that you can celebrate this year's Jubilee Year of Hope:
- Go to Confession: Here at Duke we offer Confession before each of our Sunday Masses and on Thursdays in the Quad - but you can also celebrate this beautiful Sacrament at any Catholic parish around the world.
- Bring your faith with you everywhere - physically and digitally: It takes practice, but take a moment to ask yourself if what you're doing online and in person is helping you grow in your relationship with God.
- Meditate on the Sacred Scriptures: A great way to do this is by spending time in Adoration with our Lord each Wednesday in Goodson Chapel or any time in the FAH Chapel.
- Go on a Pilgrimage: Many virtual pilgrimages are offered (like this app offered from the Jesuits) and in-person pilgrimages are being offered by many U.S. dioceses. The DCC is hosting our own pilgrimage along the ancient route of the Camino de Santiago.
- Perform acts of charity and mercy: Pope Francis specifically asks Catholics to "be tangible signs of hope for those of our brothers and sisters who experience hardships of any kind" (Spes non Confundit). Throughout this year, we can visit those in need or in difficulty (i.e. the sick, prisoners, the lonely, elderly, etc.) and work with those who feed the hungry and shelter the homeless.
As His Holiness Pope Francis so beautifully expressed it: "We must fan the flame of hope that has been given us, and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and far-sighted vision." During the Jubilee Year, the Pope invites every one of us to embark on a pilgrimage of hope, so that, "Through our witness, may hope spread to all those who anxiously seek it."
