The Solemnity of All Saints and All Souls Day

This week, the Universal Church celebrates the Solemnity of All Souls (a holy day of obligation!) on November 1, followed by All Souls Day on November 2.

All Saints’ Day celebrates the feast or solemnity of all the saints in Heaven, both saints recognized by the Church as holy men and women and those who remain unknown. Why do we celebrate this Solemnity? Saint Teresa of Calcutta is that “holiness is not the luxury of a few people, but a simple duty for you and me.” We are all called to become saints, and we can accomplish that by striving to follow God’s commands and being united with Him in love. To be holy, to be a saint, means allowing God “to live his life in us” as Mother Teresa taught. By honoring the communion of saints on this special day, we remind ourselves to look to the saints as guides and teachers, reminding us that we, too, can pursue sainthood amidst all our human imperfections.

Join the DCC on November 1 at 5:00 p.m. for an All Saints Day Mass in Duke Chapel. Throughout November, we will highlight many of our saints on our social media channels.

A day later, on the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls’ Day), the Church remembers and prays for the faithful departed: our brothers and sisters who have died marked with the sign of faith. We pray particularly for all the souls in purgatory. “Día de Los Muertos” is one of the cultural celebrations of All Souls' Day, but many traditions, Catholic and Protestant, celebrate this day to remember deceased loved ones.

Together We Thrive:
Help Sustain Our Faith Community

You might think, "I don't have enough to give."But giving isn't just for those with steady incomes—it's an opportunity to grow in trust and commitment to God and our faith in Him, even as students.

The Duke Catholic Center isn't like a typical parish with families supporting it every week, and the DCC is not funded by the university or the diocese. In fact, over 85% of our funding comes directly from individual contributions made by students, parents, and alumni.

Whether it's $5, $10, or the price of your weekly coffee, a regular weekly or monthly financial commitment shows your love for this community and keeps it thriving for all of us! Let's join together in intentional giving and make an impact today.
