Local Projects

  • Catholic Charities - Catholic Charities is the local service arm of the Catholic Church in our community. The Duke Catholic Center partners with Catholic Charities to serve the needy in the Durham community. Contact Nick Bobrinskoy or Mitch Heath for more information.

  • Habitat for Humanity – The Duke Catholic Center is proud to offer several Habitat for Humanity work days each semester, partnering with this international organization to provide housing for those who could not otherwise afford their own home. Not only does this provide a concrete way to be a good citizen of Durham, but it also provides a unique opportunity for each volunteer to get to know others in an environment removed from the usual academic pressures associated with classes.

  • Visiting Elders - From singing Christmas Carols during reading period and the winter finals sessions to simply visiting the residents through the course of the semester, those who volunteer at Hillcrest Assisted Living Center near East Campus often find another valuable perspective on life that complements the youth-centered activities on the University campus just across the street.

  • Tutoring Children - Students from the Duke Catholic Center tutor at-risk youth from disadvantaged areas of Durham in English, math, or science.
  • Hispanic Ministry - The Duke Catholic Center Hispanic Ministry seeks to engage the rich Hispanic culture and community of both Duke students and our neighbors in Durham. Students work with Chaplains at Duke Hospital to provide pastoral care to hospitalized Hispanic Catholic patients, and help to provide interpreters for local church activities (such as blood drives).  Students also provide community-building activities such as planning the annual Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass.
